According to the data of the Reserve Bank of India, 97.92 percent of 2000 rupee notes have returned to the banks, but notes worth Rs 7,409 crore are still available in the market, i.e., they are with the people, which have not yet been returned to the banks.

Notes worth Rs 7409 crore not returned to the bank-

RBI said on Thursday that 97.92 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banks. Only Rs 7,409 crore worth of notes withdrawn from circulation are now with the people. RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. As of May 19, 2023, the total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. It decreased to Rs 7,409 crore on July 31, 2024.

According to the Reserve Bank of India, 97.92 percent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have been returned. The facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 banknotes was available in all bank branches of the country till October 7, 2023.

The facility of exchanging the Rs 2,000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation is available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. RBI’s issue offices are also accepting Rs 2,000 banknotes from people and entities for depositing them in their bank accounts from October 9, 2023.

Where can you deposit the notes-

Apart from this, people are also sending Rs 2,000 notes through Indian Post to any issue office of RBI within the country. This money gets deposited in their bank account. The 19 RBI offices that deposit/exchange bank notes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. It is worth mentioning that Rs 2,000 bank notes were issued in November 2016 after demonetization of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 bank notes.
